You are a B18 member independently of being an employee at any given venue. This means that:
-
payment of Membership Obligation (minimum $80) is due regardless of whether you are employed or earning wages at one of our venues.
-
should you terminate your employment at a venue, this does not terminate your membership in the Union.
In order to leave the Union and stop accruing dues, please request an Honorable Withdrawal. Email membership@iatse-localB18.org for the Honorable Withdrawal form.
Member Responsibilities
-
Apply for membership within 30 days of beginning employment at a represented venue.
-
PAY FEES: Maintain regular and timely payments of fees due, or risk expulsion.
-
Inform the Local of change of contact information or change of employment
The B18 constitution and bylaws require that members keep the Local informed whenever there is a change in address (or other contact information) and when there is a change in employment (you stop working for a B18 employer or you add a venue to your work schedule).
This can be done by writing the office, or e-mailing the new information to Member Services. -
Inform the Local when you wish to leave the union, preferably as soon as you stop working. Non-payment of dues or termination of employment at a Local venue does not constitute a withdrawal from the Local.
(see B18's constitution and bylaws: Article 3, Sec.3).
Membership Fees/Financial Obligation
NOTE: Beginning January 1, 2024, a new Fees structure was implemented:
-
a raise in the wage assessment to 2%
-
a $400 annual cap (subject to annual increase of $25)
-
an $80 annual minimum
-
elimination of annual dues payable by the end of January
Annual Dues for years prior to 2024 are still due if they have not been paid.
No annual dues are owed for 2024 or any year thereafter.
-
Wage Assessment
Members pay 2% of gross wages earned at all venues within the jurisdiction of Local B18.
There is a minimum due of $80 and a maximum due of $400 in any calendar year. (Subject to annual increase)
Wage Assessment can be paid by one of two methods: Paycheck deduction OR Self-payment.-
Paycheck deduction (aka Check Off)
For the convenience of B18 members, most employers will collect the 2% during each pay period and send the amount to the Local. The employer shall cap such collection at $400 annually. To have the 2% deducted from your pay, please submit a Wage Assessment Check Off Authorization Form for each of your B18 employers.
Even if you are already having the 1% WA deducted from your paycheck, you have to fill out a form to authorize the 2% deduction.
CLICK HERE to fill out the Wage Assessment Check Off Authorization Form.
-
Member self-payment
Should a member prefer to self-pay the 2% assessment, they shall be responsible for submitting the amount due directly to the Local. The assessment should be received by the Local at least quarterly, according to the following schedule:-
for earnings within Quarter 1 (Jan-Feb-Mar) - by May 1
-
for earnings within Quarter 2 (Apr-May-Jun) - by August 1
-
for earnings within Quarter 3 (Jul-Aug-Sep) - by November 1
-
for earnings within Quarter 4 (Oct-Nov-Dec) - by February 1 of the following year
-
-
CLICK HERE to fill out the Wage Assessment Self-Payment Form.
-
Regardless of which method you choose you must submit one or other of these forms.
-
If a quarterly payment (at minimum) is not made, a $2/week late fee will be assessed.
-
Payments may, of course, be made more frequently, or in advance. Contact Member Services for more information, to create an alternative payment schedule, or CLICK HERE to make an online payment.
(Online payments are subject to a fee to recover what the Local is charged for online processing.)
-
Note: if you do not work or receive wages from an B18 employer within a quarter, B18's constitution and bylaws require that you inform your local of that, and you will still owe at minimum $80 for the year.
Need help calculating how much you owe? -
Member Services will calculate the amount owed if you supply a JPEG or PDF of the W-2 form(s) or latest paystub(s) from your B18 employer(s). You'll get an e-Invoice in return so that you can pay that amount online. Or you can send a check/money-order to the office.
Pay your Financial Obligation
NOTE: annual dues of $72 are eliminated as of 1/1/2024.
But past dues must still be paid to remain in good standing
Leaving Local B18
-
Honorable Withdrawal:
This form is used when a member in good standing wishes to withdraw from the Union, cease paying fees, and no longer vote.
If you terminate your employment at a B18 venue, you must still request a Withdrawal to leave the Local, or you will continue to accrue fees.
Email membership@iatse-localB18.org for the Honorable Withdrawal form.
-
Not-in-Good-Standing and Expulsion:
Failure on the part of any member to pay any financial obligation to this Local within sixty (60) days after same became payable shall result in such member being automatically declared not in good standing. A member not in good standing shall be deprived of the right to hold office, to attend meetings, and to vote. If such default continues for a period of more than six (6) months from the date that the financial obligation first became payable, the member shall be deemed automatically expelled. A written notice of the intent to expel must be sent by certified mail to the delinquent, and he or she must be given ten (10) days to respond. If no response, they will be expelled.
(Article X of the Constitution)

FAQs
Answers to frequently asked questions about Membership Fees will be posted here.
Ask away . . .
Q. WHAT ABOUT AN INACTIVE RATE?
A. There is no inactive rate.
Before 2018, the "inactive rate" was $80 a year. Now when we work, we pay a 2% wage assessment.
2% assessment on wages (minimum $80/year) = financial obligation.
Minimum financial obligation of $80 covers the per capita assessments that B18 is charged for your membership, whether or not you are working.
Q. WHAT IS FINANCIAL CORE STATUS?
A. Every year, IATSE publishes rules and policies connected with Financial Core Status in its Bulletin, which goes to all members. The latest version was in 2019's 1st Quarter Bulletin, on p.107, available HERE.
As an employee at a B18-represented venue, you may be interested in such status. Please note that any member who elects, in writing, Financial Core Status is resigning from B18, and will have no rights of membership. They will not have the right to attend membership meetings, to have a voice in the Local's policies, to run for office with the Local, to vote in the Local's elections, or to participate in the formulation of bargaining proposals and ratification votes. However, they will still be required to pay their financial obligation to the Union, and as long as they continue to do so, they still retain employment rights.
